Congressman Tom Tiffany has requested an independent investigation into the City of Madison's handling of duplicate absentee ballots. In a follow-up letter to City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl, Tiffany expressed concerns over the clerk’s office providing inconsistent explanations regarding the issue.

The letter highlights multiple instances where the Clerk’s Office revised its statements or removed information from its website. These revisions pertained to details such as the number of affected wards, distributed duplicate ballots, barcode locations, and communication efforts with voters about the errors.

“I am also skeptical of your office’s claim regarding the retention of emails, text messages, handwritten notes, and other records related to this incident given that the Clerk’s office has repeatedly revised its website to scrub or edit its initial statements after those initial statements were shown to be demonstrably false. These after-the-fact changes indicate an intent to attempt to sanitize the record, not preserve it,” Tiffany said in his letter.

Tiffany further stated, “If you are truly committed to transparency, I hope you will reconsider your opposition to an independent inquiry, make all related records public, and move quickly to hold those responsible to account, and to do so before – not after – the election.”

The full copy of Congressman Tiffany's letter is available for public reading.
