The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Schmeeckle Reserve is offering a series of family nature programs this fall. These programs, led by UW-Stevens Point natural resources students specializing in environmental education and interpretation, will be available throughout November and December. The sessions are free and open to the public.

Participants are invited to gather at the Menzel Pavilion near the Visitor Center located at 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point, unless otherwise specified. Attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

The program lineup includes various activities such as "Schmeeckle’s Sprightly Squirrels" on November 8 from 10-11 a.m., where participants can explore squirrel life and engage in related activities. Later that day, from 6-7 p.m., "The Trails to Nature" will investigate whether animals use trails like humans do.

On November 15, "Roll and Stroll Around the Lake" invites attendees to observe waterfowl at Lake Joanis from 10-11 a.m., followed by "The Tree Doctor" from 6-7 p.m., which focuses on identifying and preventing tree diseases.

Other events include "A Safehouse for Wildlife" on November 16 from 11 a.m.-noon, "Creatures of the Night Hike" on November 18 from 6-7 p.m., "Deadwood: A Source of Life" on November 22 from 10-11 a.m., "Winter Bird Watching" on December 9 from 6-7 p.m. at the Visitor Center, and finally, "A Frozen Lake’s Winter Wonderland" on December 13 from 10-11 a.m. at Lake Joanis.

For further inquiries or special needs accommodations with advance notice, individuals can contact via email at schmeeckle@uwsp.edu or call 715-346-4992. Visitors may also stop by the Visitor Center in person.

Schmeeckle Reserve functions as a field station under UW-Stevens Point's College of Natural Resources. It aims to protect ecosystems, serve as an educational outdoor classroom, and offer recreational opportunities. More information is available at www3.uwsp.edu/cnr-ap/schmeeckle.
