An alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Danny Mitchell, will deliver a speech at the winter commencement ceremony on December 14. Mitchell, a Stevens Point native and 2006 graduate, is currently known for his work as a keyboardist, bandleader, and vocalist with Miranda Lambert. He will address graduates from campuses in Stevens Point, Marshfield, and Wausau who are receiving doctoral, master's, bachelor's, and associate degrees.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Skyward Fieldhouse inside Marshfield Clinic Health System Champions Hall. The event will also be available via livestream at www.uwsp.edu/commencement.

Chancellor Thomas Gibson will oversee the ceremony alongside Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs La Vonne Cornell-Swanson. Each college's deans will handle the presentation of degrees. Music education major Karina Verdette from Green Bay will perform the national anthem. Briannah Wanca from Antigo will join Verdette to perform the Alma Mater with accompaniment by the UW-Stevens Point Symphony Orchestra under Andy Moran's direction.

Sequoyah Byas, a sociology and social work major from Milwaukee, has been chosen as the student speaker. Alumni Greg ('76) and Mari Regnier ('85) will conduct the alumni pinning ceremonies.

Parking is available for guests in any campus lot except Lot F East reserved for accessible parking.

Mitchell has established himself in various musical genres such as pop, jazz, country, and classical music since moving to Nashville after graduation. His career includes performances with artists like Anderson East and Mindy Smith as well as compositions performed by ensembles including the National Wind Ensemble.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Mitchell annually hosts Music on a Mission in Stevens Point—a holiday concert benefiting local charities—with this year's event set for December 13.
