A veteran law enforcement officer has been appointed as the new chief of Police and Security Services at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Chief Michele Haywood assumed her role on January 6, where she will oversee leadership, planning, direction, operations, and management of the University Police and Security Services, Emergency Management, and Parking Services units. She reports to Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs Pratima Gandhi.

Tony Babl retired from the position after nearly seven years with Police and Security Services. During his tenure, Babl played a crucial role in coordinating the campus's response to the pandemic and addressing various departmental needs.

Haywood retired from the Milwaukee Police Department in 2022 after 27 years of service. Her career progressed from patrol duties to becoming a captain in the Technical Communications Division. She has completed advanced training programs including Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement and at institutions such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy and Northwestern University School of Police Leadership. Haywood is also involved in professional organizations like the Association of Public-Safety Communication Officials, International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

She holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Herzing University and a Bachelor of Science in criminology and law studies from Marquette University.

“Michele Haywood’s extensive experience in law enforcement ensures that UW-Stevens Point will maintain its high standard of safety and security for our students, faculty, staff and community,” said Gandhi. “I look forward to her leadership as part of our team.”
