Reps. Tom Tiffany and Scott Perry, along with 22 other members of Congress, have reintroduced a resolution aimed at resuming formal diplomatic relations between the United States and Taiwan. The legislation seeks to end the "One China" policy, which they describe as outdated and counter-productive. Additionally, the resolution encourages support for Taiwan's membership in international organizations and advocates for a bilateral U.S.-Taiwan Free Trade Agreement.
Congressman Tiffany stated, "Taiwan has never been under the control of the People’s Republic of China – not even for a single day. It is a free, democratic, and independent nation, and it is past time for U.S. policy to reflect this undeniable objective truth."
Historically, the United States maintained normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan until 1979 when President Jimmy Carter shifted recognition to Beijing. In response, lawmakers passed the bipartisan Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), maintaining ties with Taiwan. President Reagan further strengthened this relationship through the "Six Assurances," affirming that the U.S. had not accepted China's claims over Taiwan.
Despite these measures, formal ties between the U.S. and Taiwan remain absent. Congressman Tiffany argues that current U.S. policy treats Taiwan similarly to regimes in North Korea and Iran diplomatically, which he finds inexplicable given its democratic governance.
The resolution has garnered support from 23 members of Congress including Reps. Jim Baird, Lauren Boebert, Kat Cammack, Randy Feenstra, Chuck Fleischmann, Scott Fitzgerald, Andrew Garbarino, Carlos Gimenez, Lance Gooden, Glenn Grothman, Diana Harshbarger, Jake Ellzey, Nicole Malliotakis, Rich McCormick, Dan Meuser, Zach Nunn, Chris Smith, Pete Stauber, Andy Ogles, Randy Weber, Tony Wied and Roger Williams.
