The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been recognized nationally for its research efforts. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education have rated UW-Stevens Point among Research Colleges and Universities. This designation is awarded to institutions that spend at least $2.5 million annually on research and development. UW-Stevens Point is one of 218 universities and colleges in the United States to receive this recognition, and it is among eight in Wisconsin.

In fiscal year 2024, UW-Stevens Point received $6.89 million in new research grant funding. These funds supported projects involving students and faculty from the College of Letters and Science as well as the College of Natural Resources. Funding sources included federal and state natural resources and conservation organizations, health organizations, and other universities.

Chancellor Thomas Gibson emphasized the value of research at UW-Stevens Point, stating, “UW-Stevens Point greatly values research and the educational opportunities it brings to our students and faculty.” He highlighted that undergraduate research is a focus at the university, with faculty collaborating closely with students on innovative projects that are published or presented publicly.

For 25 years, both colleges have showcased undergraduate student research through public symposiums held on campus. Students present their work through poster sessions and oral presentations alongside faculty mentors. Additionally, various majors participate in Research in the Rotunda each spring at the Wisconsin capitol, allowing students to present their findings to state legislators.

Chemistry Professor Nate Bowling has been a consistent recipient of grants from the National Science Foundation for his work on electron transfer research. Since 2013, he has collaborated with over 80 students who often co-author articles published in academic journals.

Recently, a team from UW-Stevens Point received one of three Universities of Wisconsin Innovation Grants worth $175,000 for phytoremediation research—removing synthetic materials from soil using plants. This project may receive an additional $400,000 after completing its two-year study by December 2025.

Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman commented on this achievement: “Research is a critical component across the Universities of Wisconsin and I’m proud that UW-Stevens Point has been designated by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation as among the top Research Colleges and Universities.”
