UW-Stevens Point hosts Earth Week events to promote sustainability

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is set to recognize Earth Week with a variety of events from April 21 to April 27, aimed at promoting sustainability on campus and within the surrounding community.

Among the scheduled activities is a talk by local author Dave Greschner, who will discuss his book "Soul of the Outdoors" at noon on April 22 in the Trainer Natural Resources building. This session has limited seats and requires advance registration.

The campus's annual Eco Fair, organized by the Environmental Educators and Naturalists Association, will be held on April 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room. The event will showcase local businesses and student organizations focused on sustainability, under the theme "Stories of the Earth."

Students can take part in a climbing wall competition on April 26 at the Skyward Fieldhouse, with check-in starting at noon. Additionally, Schmeeckle Reserve will host various outdoor programs, including family nature activities and a tree planting event for Earth Day on April 26-27.

Further activities include "Chalk the Walk for Earth Day" at UWSP at Marshfield from April 21-22 and at UWSP at Wausau from April 22-23.

UW-Stevens Point is notable for its sustainability efforts, being the first in the state to have building-wide composting and receive all its electricity from renewable sources. The institution is recognized for its environmental initiatives by the Princeton Review Green College Honor Roll and has achieved gold star ratings from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Recently, it secured funding to update its Carbon Neutrality Plan and is working on a Climate Action and Resilience Plan.
