Pass through time and space this May at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium will host public shows at 2 p.m. on Sundays throughout May. A summer schedule will commence after the academic year concludes on May 26, featuring shows on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m.
The events are designed to last around one hour, featuring a 25-minute segment focused on the Central Wisconsin night sky, including stars, constellations, and planets. All sessions are free to the public. However, donations are welcomed to sustain the programs.
- On May 4 at 2 p.m., the show "Explore" will delve into the historical use of the sky as a calendar and clock by scholars and scientists.
- On May 11 at 2 p.m., "Spark: The Universe in Us" will discuss how celestial events have created the elements of the Solar System, Earth, and humanity.
- On May 26 at 7 p.m., a live presentation titled "Cosmic Cycles" will explore time, calendars, and seasons in relation to cosmic cycles.
- On May 28 at 7 p.m., "Phantom of the Universe – the Search for Dark Matter" will examine the history and scientific efforts to understand dark matter.
Junior Scientist planetarium programs will occur on select Sundays from 3:40 to 4:10 p.m., following a book reading session starting at 3 p.m. This is in collaboration with the UW-Stevens Point Olson Museum of Natural History. The program beginning on May 1, titled "The Hot and Cold Game," will explore Earth's diverse climate zones and climate change.
The planetarium, located on the second floor of the UW-Stevens Point Science Building, seats 55 people and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of eight or more may arrange special showings by calling 715-346-2208 or completing an online form, though charges apply for these requests. Parking is available in Lot D behind the building and is complimentary in all university lots after 7 p.m. and on weekends.
