Professor Joshua Horn, a philosophy scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has been recognized with the 2025 University Scholar Award. His recent work includes an edited volume titled "The Last of Us and Philosophy: Look for the Light," which explores philosophical themes within the popular video game turned television series, "The Last of Us." The book is part of the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series and was published in 2024.
Horn's book examines ethical dilemmas faced by characters in an apocalyptic world affected by a parasitic fungal infection. It includes 24 essays written by various authors who are fans of the series. These essays delve into themes such as trust, pessimism, self-deception, and morality.
"The book looks almost nothing like I had first envisioned," said Horn, reflecting on his editorial experience.
Professor Dona Warren from UW-Stevens Point nominated Horn for the award, acknowledging his efforts to make philosophy accessible to a broader audience through pop culture. She stated, "What Josh is doing with philosophy and pop culture work, he’s opening that door."
William Irwin, editor of the Blackwell Philosophy series and professor of philosophy, praised Horn's ability to clarify prose and tighten argumentation. Irwin also noted Horn's contributions to discussions on other games like "The Legend of Zelda" and "Bioshock."
Horn has integrated his book into academic courses such as one led by Professor Wade Noctis at the University of Alabama. He has also participated in podcasts discussing character traits from "The Last of Us."
Looking ahead, Horn plans to publish more work on philosopher Gottfried Leibniz in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. He will also serve as president of the Society for Philosophy of Religion and speak at Fan Expo Boston.
“It’s valuable to show people that philosophy is embedded in their lives," said Horn about his mission to make philosophy relevant today.
