Social isolation. Many of us have experienced it at some point in our lives. However, people with disabilities have an increased likelihood of loneliness and chronic social isolation. Social isolation is associated with higher risks for health problems such as heart disease, depression and cognitive decline.
myTEAM TRIUMPH is an organization focused on supporting people with diverse abilities so they may come together for training, racing and social events with the aim of addressing social isolation through a teamwork approach of endurance athletics. The organization’s local chapter myTEAM TRIUMPH WI is doing great work right here in our communities and Security Health Plan of Wisconsin, Inc., in partnership with Marshfield Clinic Health System, are proud financial investors in that effort.
The contributions from Security Health Plan and Marshfield Clinic help sponsor myTEAM TRIUMPH WI “Captains” in the northcentral region including Marshfield, Mosinee, Stevens Point and Wausau. A Captain is someone with a disability (invisible or visible) participating in endurance events they normally couldn't do on their own without the support of myTEAM TRIUMPH WI’s “Angels” who are able-bodied athletes who help Captains reach their goals.
Donations such as those from Security Health and Marshfield Clinic are important in helping myTEAM TRIUMPH WI fulfill its mission to enrich the well-being of individuals with diverse abilities. “The events in which our Captains participate cost money in terms of registration, specialized equipment and training,” said Angel Powell, crew captain for myTEAM TRIUMPH WI. “We appreciate the support we receive because it helps limit our costs and allows us to grow the program.”
Donations go directly toward event participation and helping keep the equipment up to date and safe for Captains to use. Powell added, “Our captains mean the world to us. They are family.”
Security Health Plan and Marshfield Clinic work tirelessly to promote overall community wellness. As such, both organizations are eager to support myTEAM TRIUMPH WI’s efforts focused on inclusion programming with the goal of improved physical, mental and emotional health.
