Contemporary art by a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point faculty member is currently being showcased at the Edna Carlsten Art Gallery at UW-Stevens Point. The exhibition, titled “WISCONTEMPORARY,” features works by Andy Gambrell, an assistant professor of art. An open reception and artist talk are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 14, from 5-7 p.m.
The exhibition will be on display until Thursday, Dec. 5. Gambrell's art has been exhibited in over ninety shows across the United States and internationally. His pieces are part of private collections in various countries including the US, Canada, Colombia, Switzerland, Germany, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.
Gambrell’s artistic approach was influenced by his formative years in Miami among abstract painters such as Jules Olitski and Darby Bannard. His contemporary work aims to renew and extend American abstract painting through a unique technique involving an eye-tracking viewfinder he developed. This device helps him create digital drawings based on the path his eyes take while observing the Wisconsin landscape.
This innovative method transforms scenes ranging from Arizona’s wilderness to Wisconsin’s fields into a celebration of the American landscape through abstract painting.
