City Of Wausau issued the following announcement on Sept. 22
The City of Wausau is pleased to present Wausau’s inaugural Poet Laureate, Dawn Anderson.
Ms. Anderson is a Wausau native who says her purpose is to put good into the world through positive poetry. “I truly believe in the power of poetry,” Ms. Anderson said. “Poetry inspires. Poetry helps us process our thoughts and feelings and choose happiness. A poem is shared between each reader and writer. We bring our own perspective and experiences to that poem, making our own meaning. This is powerful stuff that has been ‘secret’ far too long.”
As Wausau’s Poet Laureate, Ms. Anderson is charged with celebrating and expanding on poetry and literary arts in our community by promoting poetry as an art form, expanding access to the literary arts, connecting the community to poetry, and promoting poetry as a community voice that contributes to a sense of place.
Ms. Anderson has decades of experience in writing poetry, she has been internationally published in notable journals, and facilitated poetry workshops and lead readings across the country and world. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from the University of Wisconsin, her Masters of Education Technology from Boise State University, and holds several certificates in training, teaching, and human resources.
Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg enthusiastically thanked the Wausau Arts Commission for their work in selecting Ms. Anderson as Wausau’s first poet laureate. “The Wausau Arts commission appointed a highly qualified three-member jury. That team reviewed and interviewed several extremely talented candidates for this inaugural position. After meeting with Dawn, I know she’s the perfect person to be Wausau’s first poet laureate.”
Poet Laureate is a two-year term. She will share four poems per year with the community in an official capacity in addition participating in the Central Wisconsin Book Festival. Ms. Anderson’s first official appearance as Wausau Poet Laureate will be tonight during the Central Wisconsin Book Festival.
“Wausau, let’s write and read and share poetry, together,” Ms. Anderson said. “Along the way, we will build a closer community and appreciate the wonderful spaces, places, and people of our home.”
