WASHINGTON, DC – On May 11, Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) released the following statement after voting yes on House-passed H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023.
The parole section of the Secure the Border Act is Congressman Tiffany’s Immigration Parole Reform Act of 2023, which will end the Biden administration’s flagrant abuse of this authority. This legislation prohibits the Secretary of Homeland Security from granting parole “according to eligibility criteria describing an entire class of potential parole recipients,” otherwise known as categorical parole.
“For the last two years, the Biden administration has deliberately erased our southern border, enriched cartels and human traffickers, unleashed a tidal wave of illegal aliens and deadly drugs into our communities, and disrespected the millions of legal immigrants who followed our laws and came here the right way. That ends today,” said Tiffany.
H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023, would:
- Force the Biden Administration to restart construction of the border wall
- End catch and release
- Deploy border security technologies to the southern and northern border
- Restore integrity to the asylum process
- Increase the number of Border Patrol agents and provide bonus pay
- Require transparency regarding illegal crossings from the Department of Homeland Security
- Strengthen current laws to protect unaccompanied children from human trafficking
- End parole abuse
- Reinstate a program similar to the highly successful “Remain in Mexico” framework in place during the Trump administration
- Restricts funding to NGOs that facilitate or encourage unlawful activity
