Congressman Tiffany’s Office to Co-Host Ceremony Renaming the New Richmond Post Office

NEW RICHMOND, WI – On August 23, 2023, Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07), alongside Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), announced that their offices will co-host a ceremony to rename the New Richmond Post Office located at 430 South Knowles Avenue to the "Captain Robert C. Harmon and Private John R. Peirson Post Office Building.” The ceremony will be held on Friday, August 25th, at 11:00 a.m. in conjunction with the United States Postal Service (USPS).Rep. Tiffany’s bill to honor these two WWII veterans, H.R. 8217, was signed into law through an end-of-year legislative package in 2022. The entire Wisconsin delegation cosponsored the legislation, and Senator Baldwin and Senator Johnson introduced a Senate companion.

Congressman Tiffany’s office will be joined by representatives from Senator Ron Johnson’s office and Senator Tammy Baldwin’s office. Governor Tony Evers will also be attending the unveiling as well as the brothers’ family and local leaders. This event is open to the public, press, and photographers. 

Background:

Captain Robert C. Harmon and Private John R. Peirson were half-brothers from New Richmond. Captain Harmon was a member of the 558th Army Air Corp Squadron and was a B-26 bomber pilot stationed in Britain during WWII. While serving his 51st mission, his plane was shot down over France a week before the D-Day invasion. In recognition of his valor, Captain Harmon earned 11 oak leaf clusters and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

Private Peirson enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944. He was motivated by a sense of duty to his country and the loss of his older half-brother. As a member of the 77th Infantry Division, Pvt. Peirson was mortally wounded during an Easter Day assault on the island of Okinawa, Japan in 1945. Pvt. Peirson, the 24- year-old father of two young sons, was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
