Yesterday, Congressman Tom Tiffany’s (WI-07) legislation, H.R. 6651, passed the U.S. House unanimously and now heads to the U.S. Senate. This bill honors the service and sacrifice of Sergeant Kenneth E. Murphy by renaming the United States Post Office in Necedah as the Sergeant Kenneth E. Murphy Post Office Building. Sergeant Murphy, a Necedah resident, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his gallantry in Vietnam, as well as a Purple Heart.
“Sergeant Murphy’s heroism and unwavering dedication to our great nation, as well as to his fellow service members, deserve to be recognized. By renaming the Necedah postal facility in his honor, we not only pay tribute to his remarkable contributions but also ensure that his legacy is forever remembered,” said Congressman Tiffany.
“I am honored to be considered for this prestigious nomination for the Necedah Post Office Renaming. I was born in the house I grew up and have never left Necedah,” said Sergeant Kenneth E. Murphy.
H.R. 6651 would rename the U.S. Post Office located at 603 West 3rd Street in Necedah, Wisconsin, as the “Sergeant Kenneth E. Murphy Post Office Building.” Sergeant Murphy was born and raised in Necedah and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On November 9, 1966, while serving as a squad leader on a search-and-destroy mission near Tuy Hoa, Sergeant Murphy fearlessly ran through a hail of bullets to try and help several wounded soldiers. Despite being wounded twice, including once in the head, he organized his men, led them in a fierce assault on the enemy, and enabled his men to break out of the trap and overwhelm the insurgent force. Sergeant Murphy received a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross for his service and sacrifice. He resides in Necedah to this day.
The entire Wisconsin delegation are original cosponsors of H.R. 6651.
