The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will host a public lecture on the history of cannabis cultivation as part of its 2025-26 College of Letters and Science Community Engagement Series. The event, titled “The History of Cannabis in Wisconsin and Beyond,” is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Theatre.
Brian Barringer, professor and chair of the Department of Biology, will lead the discussion. He will address how cannabis cultivation has changed over time and discuss shifting attitudes toward the plant within science and society. Barringer said, “Wisconsin was once one of our nation’s leading producers of cannabis. By studying this history, we gain insight into how past choices shape current opportunities for research, innovation and community well-being.”
Attendees will also learn about UW-Stevens Point’s ongoing multidisciplinary efforts in cannabis research and education. The lecture series aims to foster dialogue about topics such as cannabis regulation, public health implications, and the plant’s broader impact on policy and culture.
Participation is free but advance registration by September 18 is recommended to ensure seating. Reservations can be made online at uwspcannabis.eventbrite.com. Additional details about the series are available at https://www.uwsp.edu/2025-2026-community-engagement-series/.
All events in the series are open to the public and can be accessed via livestream.
