A discussion on the search for extraterrestrial life will be held as part of a "Badger Talk" at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in November. The event, titled "How can we find other life in the universe?" is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, in Room 105 of the UW-Stevens Point Chemistry Biology Building.
The talk will be hosted by Thomas Beatty, an assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He will explore the search for life on distant planets using advanced telescopes. Beatty's academic background includes a bachelor's degree from Harvard University, a master's in physics from MIT, and a PhD in astronomy from Ohio State University. Prior to his current role, he contributed as an instrument scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope project.
Beatty's research involves measuring exoplanet atmospheres to understand their composition and climate, which aids in comprehending planet formation and the potential for life beyond Earth. He has played a part in discovering nine new exoplanets.
"Badger Talks," organized by UW-Madison, are designed to inspire ideas and discussions on significant topics within communities. More information is available at badgertalks.wisc.edu.
