The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is set to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a public event this month, marking the third annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative occasion titled “Freedom: Your Voice, Instilling Hope and Joy.” The event will take place on Wednesday, January 22, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room at Stevens Point.

Kevin Leavy, president of the Beloit City Council and director of food and nutrition at Freeport Hospital, will be the keynote speaker. Attendees can join a meet-and-greet session with Leavy from 6 to 6:30 p.m. The event is free, though registration by noon on January 22 is recommended. Refreshments will be provided, and there is an option to attend virtually.

UWSP Chancellor Thomas Gibson commented on the importance of the celebration, stating, “Join us to celebrate Dr. King’s commitment to education and building a society of equality and integrity.” He emphasized that everyone has a role in making their voices heard and advocating for justice and rights.

Leavy's extensive career in service and leadership includes being Beloit's longest-serving African American city councilman. He has been pivotal in promoting education equity as the first African American chairperson of the Blackhawk Technical College Board. His influence extends into youth development through his previous role as president of the Black Male Role Model Group.

Registration for the event can be completed at https://uwspmlk.eventbrite.com.
