The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has appointed Stuart Benkert as the new dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC). Benkert, previously head of Performing Arts and Technology at North Carolina State University, will take on his new role starting July 14.
Benkert replaces Valerie Cisler, who is retiring after an eight-year tenure as dean. He will oversee approximately 1,000 students pursuing degrees in COFAC's School of Performing Arts and the School of Design and Communication. These programs cover a range of disciplines including acting, musical theatre, arts management, music education, graphic design, media studies, and more.
With a background in university music and fine arts programs across North Carolina, Colorado, and Tennessee, Benkert brings extensive experience as an administrator and educator. At NC State, he was instrumental in launching the university's first four-year arts degree—a music technology program developed with engineering and performing arts collaboration. His efforts also led to expanded programming that saw an increase in student participation.
“Dr. Benkert is an experienced and enthusiastic arts educator, compelling communicator and accomplished higher education administrator,” said La Vonne Cornell-Swanson, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “His considerable experience working directly with students, managing faculty and academic affairs and engaging external constituents serves as excellent preparation for his new role as dean of COFAC.”
Benkert has focused on supporting student success by ensuring they have access to necessary resources. He looks forward to joining the creative community at UW-Stevens Point while advocating for faculty and students.
“My work in building student success and fine arts helps build dreams and ensures the artists’ vision,” said Benkert. “There is a lot of support for the arts in Stevens Point and I want to be a part of that.”
Prior to this appointment, Benkert served as founding dean of Undergraduate Education and Student Success at Colorado State University Pueblo and was the founding head of the Department of Performing Arts at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He remains active in professional music and educational organizations.
Benkert holds degrees in music education from institutions including the University of Kansas, University of South Florida, and St. Petersburg Junior College. Additionally, he has obtained certificates in various fields such as philanthropy, research, leadership, accounting, and inclusion.
Stuart Benkert resides with his wife Jackie; they have two adult children.
