The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Allen F. Blocher Planetarium will offer a series of public shows this July, providing an opportunity to explore the night sky over Central Wisconsin. The planetarium will host these events at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the month.
Each session lasts approximately one hour and includes a 25-minute presentation focused on the current night sky, highlighting bright stars, constellations, and planets visible in the region. While attendance is free, donations are encouraged to support ongoing programs.
The schedule for July includes:
- Wednesday, July 2: “Two Small Pieces of Glass – The Amazing Telescope” will discuss the history of the telescope from Galileo’s modifications to a child’s spyglass.
- Monday, July 7: “Unveiling the Invisible Universe” offers insights into how various cosmic messengers have revealed secrets throughout astronomy's history.
- Wednesday, July 9: “Forward! To the Moon!” features Kari Byron from “MythBusters” and “Crash Test World,” discussing NASA’s space endeavors in the 21st century and future plans for establishing permanence beyond Earth.
- Monday, July 14: “Dark Matter Mystery – Exploring a Cosmic Secret” delves into what holds the universe together with scientists hunting for dark matter.
- Wednesday, July 16: “One Sky Project” presents short films showcasing how different cultures interpret humanity’s shared sky.
Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis for up to 55 attendees. Groups of eight or more can arrange special showings by contacting 715-346-2208 or submitting an online request form; these requests may incur a fee.
The planetarium is situated on the second floor of UW-Stevens Point's Science Building at 2001 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point. Parking is complimentary in Lot D behind the building after 7 p.m. and during weekends.
