At the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), wellness is more than just a concept; it is an integral part of the institution's mission. For over 18 years, Sallie Scovill has been instrumental in fostering a culture of wellness at UWSP through her dedicated service and innovative programs. In recognition of her efforts, she has been awarded the 2025 University Service Award.
Scovill, a professor in the School of Health Sciences and Wellness, has played a significant role as the university’s Employee Wellness coordinator. Her initiatives include transforming UWSP into a tobacco-free campus and enhancing lactation facilities. "Relentless is the word that comes to mind when I think of Sallie," said Corinna Neeb, emergency management specialist. "She really goes above and beyond in her efforts to make sure UWSP has a culture of wellness."
Her contributions extend to organizing activities such as weekly wellness emails, noon fitness walks, and coordinating events like the Move for Mental Health Walk. These initiatives have expanded through grants from the Employee Trust Funds, supporting mental health training and student-led biometric screenings.
"She never has much of a budget in hand, but she gets the biggest bang for the buck," Neeb remarked. "Thanks to her, we’re making real progress." Scovill also involves students in practical projects like capstone research on lactation room improvements and volunteer roles at wellness summits.
"Her commitment to both employee and student well-being is evident in her tireless efforts," said Professor Corey Huck. "She’s played a key role in developing strategic wellness initiatives and student programming."
Beyond campus, Scovill collaborates with local groups such as the Portage County Coalition for Physical Activity and Nutrition. She also serves on the board of the Wellness Council of Wisconsin since 2018.
"This award is not just about what I did," said Scovill. "It’s about what happens when employees, students, communities and leaders all work together to create a wellness environment."
In addition to her roles at UWSP, Scovill is certified in Mental Health First Aid and serves as a Well Wisconsin ambassador. Her dedication continues to inspire both students and colleagues alike.
"She is truly an example for all employees," Neeb stated. "Students love her. Co-workers love her." Despite decades in the field, Scovill's enthusiasm remains strong as she continues to influence policy changes and engage with students across various platforms.
