After several years away, Amanda Gilman has returned to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) with a mission to give back to the community that supported her educational journey. A graduate of UWSP in 2012, Gilman was the first student to complete an online bachelor's degree program at the university.
Gilman's educational path included attending multiple institutions, giving birth to her son, and eventually returning to her hometown of Milwaukee. Despite these changes, she completed her education at UWSP due to her connection with mentors who shaped her experience.
"I have yet to find something that mimics Stevens Point," Gilman stated. "I earned my bachelor’s degree online with the help of my adviser because I wasn’t ready to give up on Stevens Point."
Currently serving as the major gifts officer for the College of Letters and Science (COLS), Gilman has secured over $6 million in funding since 2023. This includes $1 million for renaming the Haeni Chemistry Biology Building. She finds fulfillment in connecting donors with students and witnessing their positive impact on campus.
"What makes my role super fulfilling is connecting donors with students," said Gilman. "Watching something go from an idea to reality...is so rewarding."
Her efforts have not gone unnoticed by colleagues like Brian Stezenski-Williams, who praised her effectiveness and dedication. "Amanda established herself as a respected, well-liked, reliable colleague and exceptionally effective gift officer," he noted.
In addition to her fundraising work, Gilman serves as an advisor for the Black Student Union (BSU). Her contributions have led to professional development seminars and strengthened resources for students of color on campus.
"BSU hosts events that educate and allow opportunities for students to network," explained Marshfield Campus Executive Tony Andrews. He highlighted how alumni engagement has been bolstered through Gilman's efforts.
Vice Chancellor William Broussard commended Gilman's commitment: "She has mentored student leaders in the BSU since 2023...Ms. Gilman is a committed advocate of student success at UWSP."
Reflecting on her journey, Gilman expressed a strong sense of belonging at UWSP: "Stevens Point does a tremendous job of creating community...This is home."
