A series of free instrumental performances will be available to the public at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. This is part of the American Suzuki Institute (ASI), which brings together parents, students, and teachers from around the world for musical instruction and concerts.

The ASI is sponsored by the Aber Suzuki Center at UW-Stevens Point and is celebrating its 55th year. It will take place over two week-long sessions from July 20-25 and July 27-August 1 at the Noel Fine Arts Center. Participants can attend classes in various instruments including violin, viola, voice, cello, piano, harp, chamber music, and early childhood education. The institute has a long history as it was the first Suzuki summer institute outside Japan.

This year's event will feature guest artists such as violinist Matthew Dahm on July 21 in Michelsen Hall and violist Jane Mitchell on July 28 at Sentry Insurance Theater. Both artists will perform with pianist Nancy Boston.

Numerous solo and group performances by faculty, students, and guest artists are scheduled throughout the institute. These performances cover all instruments and skill levels.

The following performances are open to the public:

- Monday, July 21: Student honors recital at 4 p.m., Guest Artist recital featuring Matthew Dahm at 7 p.m.

- Tuesday, July 22: Student honors recital at 4 p.m., Faculty recital at 7 p.m.

- Thursday, July 24: Informal recital at 4 p.m., Advanced chamber ensembles concert at 7 p.m.

- Friday, July 25: Piano festival concert at 11:15 a.m., Harp festival concert at 4:15 p.m., Violin festival concert at 7 p.m.

- Monday, July 28: Student honors recital at 4 p.m., Guest Artist recital featuring Jane Mitchell at Sentry Theater

- Tuesday, July 29: Student honors recital at Michelsen Hall

- Wednesday through Friday include more recitals and festival concerts.

The ASI follows Shinichi Suzuki's method of teaching music similar to language learning with parental involvement. Participants of all ages are welcome; those aged thirteen or older may stay in campus residence halls. More information about ASI or the Aber Suzuki Center can be found on their website or by calling their office.
