Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed Congressman Tom Tiffany's Wabeno Economic Development Act with significant bipartisan support. The legislation, known as H.R. 3937, aims to facilitate the transfer of 14 acres in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest to Tony’s Wabeno Redi-Mix at fair market value.

The owner of Tony’s Wabeno Redi-Mix sought assistance from Congressman Tiffany after years of stalled progress with the U.S. Forest Service. The business faces a shortage of aggregate materials such as stone, sand, and gravel and is projected to deplete its supply within two years. Acquiring the adjacent parcel is essential for the company's future operations.

"This conveyance will deliver long-term economic growth and protect local jobs for the people of Wabeno and Forest County," stated Congressman Tiffany. "It will ensure Tony’s Wabeno Redi-Mix stays open and continues serving the community for years to come."

Tony’s Wabeno Redi-Mix has been operating for 25 years, employing 17 people while supplying concrete to contractors and homeowners within a 50-mile radius. The company undertakes various projects including work for the Forest County Potawatomi Community, local fire stations, town offices, agricultural projects, and residential construction.

Efforts to negotiate this land exchange with the Forest Service began over eight years ago but faced delays due to prioritization issues and resource constraints within the agency. With much of Forest County designated as part of a national forest, private land available for small business expansion is limited.

The legislation has received backing from several local entities including the Wabeno Area Chamber of Commerce, Forest County Economic Development Partnership, and Town of Wabeno. Support was also expressed by Tom Tallier, a supervisor on the Forest County Board representing District 8.

Rep. Tiffany's comments on this matter can be viewed online along with Rep. Debbie Dingell's statement in support.
