Mid-State Technical College recently hosted the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Ag Day Celebration alongside its annual Farm Tour on March 11. The event, which took place in Marshfield, focused on agriculture's role in Wisconsin and showcased new technology and practices aimed at improving farming operations. Attendees included local and state leaders, educators, students, industry representatives, farmers, and professionals.

“This event is about so much more than recognizing agriculture’s impact,” stated Dr. Alex Lendved, dean of Mid-State’s Marshfield Campus and School of Applied Technology. “It’s about fostering partnerships, sharing ideas and ensuring that future generations continue to grow and thrive in this industry.”

The day began with a breakfast for the WTCS Ag Day Celebration at the American Legion in Marshfield. Special guest speakers included Marshfield City Mayor Lois TeStrake, WTCS President Layla Merrifield, Mid-State President Dr. Shelly Mondeik, and State of Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Assistant Deputy Secretary Mike Strigel.

“Agriculture is very much the backbone of our district as well as the backbone of Wisconsin,” said Dr. Shelly Mondeik. “Our farmers and our ag businesses make life possible for all of us."

Assistant Deputy Secretary Strigel highlighted that agriculture contributes $116 billion to Wisconsin's economy with one in ten jobs linked to it. He noted that “10 percent of Wisconsin farmers are considered young and emerging,” surpassing the national average.

Layla Merrifield emphasized how technical colleges adapt to meet evolving agricultural needs: “Today’s programs are teaching things like drone piloting, iPad apps and artificial intelligence...”

After breakfast, participants toured two farms focusing on modern technology use: Romadka View Holsteins in Granton owned by Mark and Kelli Elmhorst; Heeg Brothers Dairy LLC in Colby featured expansion efforts.

The day concluded with lunch featuring Alice in Dairyland Halei Heinzel.
