A resolution introduced by Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) to resume formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan and end the outdated "One China Policy" has gained support from 50 House Republicans. The increasing number of supporters reflects a growing momentum in Congress to recognize Taiwan as an independent and democratic country.
Congressman Tiffany emphasized the need for US policy to align with the reality that Taiwan has never been under the control of the People's Republic of China or part of its territory. He stated, "It is long past time for U.S. policy to reflect the objective reality... This important milestone shows that momentum is growing to turn the page on this failed 1970s-era policy."
The US maintained normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan until 1979 when then-President Jimmy Carter abruptly cut off formal ties with Taipei and recognized the Communist regime in Beijing. In response, lawmakers passed the bipartisan Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), which served as the foundation for continued US ties with Taiwan. President Reagan further strengthened the relationship with the "Six Assurances," affirming that the US has not altered its position and has never accepted Communist China's claims of sovereignty over Taiwan.
Despite the TRA and the "Six Assurances," the US still lacks formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, treating its democratically elected government on the same level as brutal regimes in North Korea, Iran, and even worse than Cuba's dictatorship, which was recognized by President Obama and Vice President Biden during their second term.
In the previous Congress, Congressman Tiffany's resolution had only one cosponsor. However, in the current Congress, the resolution has gained support from 50 cosponsors, indicating a significant increase in backing.
