Mid-State Technical College has introduced a new program aimed at training individuals in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) field. The HVAC-R Technician associate in applied science program is now open for applications and consists of 60 credits.

This program educates students on the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems in various settings, including residential, commercial, and industrial environments. A core component of the training involves diagnosing system problems, pinpointing malfunctioning parts, and applying suitable repair solutions. Additionally, students will learn to enhance HVAC systems for improved energy efficiency, airflow, and performance. Safety in handling electrical wiring, circuits, and control systems, as well as expertise in refrigerant management with adherence to environmental regulations, is emphasized.

The HVAC-R curriculum at Mid-State includes hands-on experience with essential industry tools like gauges, vacuum pumps, and multimeters. Practical training simulates real-life scenarios such as system installation, repairs, and inspections.

“Mid-State’s new HVAC-R program was developed in direct response to feedback from local employers who emphasized the urgent need for skilled technicians in this high-demand field,” stated Brigitta Altmann-Austin, Mid-State Dean of Applied Technology. “We’re proud to deliver a hands-on, industry-informed program that prepares students for meaningful, well-paying careers while supporting the workforce needs of our region.”

Ryan Kraft, area service manager for Bassett Mechanical, expressed, “I am excited that Mid-State is providing a HVAC-R Technician degree program. The demand for HVAC service technicians in central Wisconsin is high, and hiring the correct candidate can be a challenge. A local program opportunity that supports this growing industry is great for Bassett as well as other HVAC-R service contractors in the area.”
