The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra (CWSO), in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, will take over leadership of the Very Young Composers (VYC) program. The move is intended to secure the future of the initiative, which has given fourth- and fifth-grade students opportunities to create and hear their own music performed by professionals and students for more than 15 years.
Andy Moran, assistant professor and CWSO executive and music director, commented on the transition: “The CWSO is excited and eager to add this program to our growing list of community outreach programs. As a parent of two children who have participated in Very Young Composers, I have seen firsthand how impactful the curriculum and instruction can be. Bob Rosen and the VYC staff have laid a strong foundation for this program to continue to flourish and grow.”
Robert (Bob) Rosen founded VYC locally after being inspired by composer Jon Deak. With his retirement approaching, Rosen expressed optimism about CWSO’s role in continuing the project. “During the 15 years of this award-winning program, hundreds of students have had the opportunity to compose original music,” said Rosen. “Now, under the direction of the CWSO, the program can continue to benefit the children of central Wisconsin and show how music composition can be part of elementary school curricula.”
Further information about upcoming cycles for VYC will be shared later this year.
CWSO marks its 76th year bringing live music performances to central Wisconsin. Its roster includes 65 musicians such as educators, professors, students, and other professionals dedicated to musical engagement and education.
