The Paper Science and Chemical Engineering Foundation at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point awarded $54,500 in scholarships this fall to 49 students majoring in paper science and chemical engineering.
The foundation provides scholarships each semester to students in those majors who have a 3.20 grade point average, said Gregg Aiken, executive director of the Paper Science and Chemical Engineering Foundation. Scholarship support is for up to eight semesters with top students receiving up to $10,600.
"We currently have 96 students majoring in paper science and chemical engineering," Aiken said. "Most will work a paid nine-month co-op position in industry and additional paid summer internships and work in engineering positions upon graduation with starting salaries averaging $72,500."
The foundation was established in 1974 as a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization to promote and receive philanthropic gifts to support the paper science program. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $3.9 million in scholarships and program support.
