The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is gearing up to celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day on Thursday, April 18, as part of the National Poetry Month festivities. The event encourages individuals to select a poem, carry it with them, and share it with others, fostering moments of connection and appreciation through the art of poetry.

Marketing/Outreach Librarian Nerissa Nelson expressed the university's enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We’re thrilled to bring the joy of poetry to our community in such a tangible way." Nelson highlighted the significance of Poem in Your Pocket Day as an opportunity for people to connect through the shared language of poetry, creating moments of discovery and appreciation.

The UWSP Libraries, in collaboration with community partners, will provide access to a variety of poems in print and digital formats for those seeking inspiration for the day. This initiative aims to encourage individuals to explore the rich collections of poetry available in libraries and bookstores, promoting a deeper engagement with the literary arts.

In conjunction with the celebration, the UW-Stevens Point Allen F. Blocher Planetarium will host "Poetry in the Planetarium" on Saturday, April 20, featuring astronomy-themed poem readings by UWSP students. This event commemorates the planetarium’s 60th anniversary and further underscores the university's commitment to integrating poetry into various facets of the community.

Nelson extended an invitation to the public, stating, “We encourage everyone to join us on April 18 in sharing the love of poetry. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to connect, engage, and inspire.” Poem in Your Pocket Day is an official activity established by the American Academy of Poets in celebration of National Poetry Month.
