The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Allen F. Blocher Planetarium will host a series of planetarium shows this summer. Scheduled for 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout May and June, these events are free and open to the public, with donations appreciated to support the continuation of the programs.
The lineup includes:
- Monday, May 27: "One Sky" – A presentation on how various cultures interpret the night sky.
- Wednesday, May 29: "Back to the Moon for Good" – Narrated by Tim Allen, this show explores moon exploration history and future prospects.
- Monday, June 3: "Supermassive Black Holes: Uncovering the Invisible" – An examination of black hole physics within galaxy evolution.
- Wednesday, June 5: "Phantom of the Universe: The Search for Dark Matter" – Discusses dark matter and scientific collaboration in its study.
- Monday, June 10: "Two Small Pieces of Glass: The Amazing Telescope" – Covers the history of telescopes from Galileo’s modifications to modern advancements.
- Wednesday, June 12: "Earth, Sun, and the Moon" – Focuses on tides, moon phases, seasons, and eclipses.
- Monday, June 17: "Cosmic Castaways" – Investigates isolated stars in deep space.
- Wednesday, June 19: "Sunstruck" – Explores the sun's impact on Earth.
- Monday, June 24: "Making A Star and Its Entourage" – Chronicles humanity's journey to understand the universe.
- Wednesday, June 26: "Seeing – A Photon’s Journey Across Space, Time and Mind" – Narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson; follows a photon’s path from a distant star to a human retina.
Seating at the planetarium is limited to 55 people on a first come, first served basis. Groups of eight or more can schedule special showings by calling 715-346-2208 or completing an online request form; fees apply for these requests.
The planetarium is situated on the second floor of UW-Stevens Point's Science Building at 2001 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point. Parking is available in Lot D behind the building and is free after 7 p.m. and on weekends in all university lots.
Additionally, it was announced that the Arthur J. Pejsa Observatory will be closed for summer and will reopen for viewings in mid-September.
