The Olson Museum of Natural History at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will enhance its community engagement through new displays and programming, supported by a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
The Inspire! Grant for Small Museums, totaling nearly $75,000 over more than two years, focuses primarily on accessibility in the museum’s ongoing renovation efforts.
The IMLS Inspire grant will fund the acquisition of modern displays that are versatile and functional for all populations. Brigid Ferkett, museum outreach specialist, stated that the grant would expedite the purchase of these displays for rock and fossil collections. These displays will incorporate universal design as much as possible in interpretive educational programs. Additionally, digital media will be used to engage community members.
The Olson Museum has relocated to three remodeled classrooms on the first floor of the UWSP Science Building. The display cases and interpretive signage from the old museum were difficult to reuse due to their custom fit in Albertson Hall.
“The museum is an important resource in Stevens Point, offering a unique educational experience bringing science and culture to the public,” said Ferkett. “We hope that these grant funds make a big impact on our campus and in central Wisconsin as we make our exhibits richer through these improvements.”
Furthermore, the Inspire grant will support multiple student positions providing invaluable career experiences. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply, especially those interested in museum studies and science education. They will gain knowledge in planning and implementing interpretive programming and collection display and care.
As renovations proceed on the rock and fossil space, community members can help evaluate museum installations as part of the grant process. UW-Stevens Point staff, students, and visitors will be invited to complete surveys during their visits to gauge success.
IMLS Director Crosby Kemper emphasized that this investment benefits the broader community: “Museums bring people together by providing important programs, services, and collections. These institutions are trusted spaces where people can learn, explore and grow,” Kemper said. “IMLS is proud to support their initiatives through our grants as they educate and enhance their communities.”
Currently open by appointment for educational programs while finalizing display spaces, those interested in visiting or organizing group visits should contact Ferkett at bferkett@uwsp.edu or call 715-346-2858.
