An exhibit celebrating the Mexican tradition of honoring deceased loved ones is currently on display at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The "Dia De Los Muertos" exhibition, organized by the UW-Stevens Point Multicultural Resource Center and Edna Carlsten Art Gallery, is open to the public from October 29 to November 7. It is located in the Noel Fine Arts Center Carlsten Gallery at 1800 Portage Street, Stevens Point.
The gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. from Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. An ofrenda reception will take place in the Carlsten Gallery from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, November 1.
"Dia De Los Muertos," or Day of the Dead, is a two-day holiday that reunites the living with their deceased loved ones. Families create ofrendas (offerings) as tributes to those who have passed away. These altars are adorned with marigold flowers, photos, and favorite foods and drinks of the departed, encouraging visits from their souls during celebrations.
The Edna Carlsten Art Gallery features works by local, national, and international artists and hosts community events while maintaining a permanent collection of fine art and design works. The gallery includes three ceiling-mounted projectors and a sound system for use throughout its space.
