An art installation by Wisconsin artists Michelle Grabner and Brad Killam is currently on display at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Carlsten Gallery. The exhibit, titled "Swept Over the Rug," will be available for viewing until Friday, March 7. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 6, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Grabner's work in this exhibit highlights custodial implements as a tribute to janitorial labor, an idea that took shape during her artist-in-residency at Kohler Co. She uses materials such as silverleaf, bronze, and porcelain to celebrate the design and utility of these objects.
Her approach contrasts with Killam’s interest in traditional genre painting and its historical context. Despite their differing artistic methods, both artists share a commitment to art as a lived experience through their daily environments.
Killam's rural landscapes prompt reflection on personal custodial practices and responsibilities towards the environment. This reflects the couple's life together as artists, educators, and parents.
Michelle Grabner holds the title of Guggenheim Fellow and Crown Family Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Brad Killam serves as a professor at College of DuPage. The duo has been collaborating on various artistic projects since the 1990s.
The Edna Carlsten Art Gallery not only features local, national, and international artists but also hosts community events while maintaining a permanent collection of fine art and design works. Within it lies the Schneider Gallery, which exclusively showcases student artworks from past to present. Both galleries support university students by providing opportunities for experimentation and real-world gallery experience.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
