The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is offering a series of planetarium and laser light shows throughout March at the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. These events provide an opportunity to explore the universe while enjoying popular music.
Planetarium shows are scheduled for Sundays at 2 p.m., featuring a 25-minute presentation on the night sky over Central Wisconsin, highlighting bright stars, constellations, and planets. The public can attend these free one-hour events, though donations are welcome to support ongoing programs.
Laser light shows will be available from March 26-30 at 7, 8, 9, and 10 p.m., with tickets sold at the door starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission costs $7 for adults, $6 for students, and $5 for UWSP students with ID.
On March 2, attendees can watch "Two Small Pieces of Glass," detailing the history of the telescope from Galileo's modifications to its modern uses. On March 9, "Seeing! A Photon's Journey Across Space, Time, and Mind" narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson will be shown. Finally, on March 30, "Big Astronomy" will highlight individuals who push technological boundaries in scientific discovery using advanced telescopes.
The laser show lineup includes:
- March 26: "Laser Zeppelin"
- March 27: "Laser Vinyl: Classic Rock"
- March 28: "Laser Taylor Swift"
- March 29: "Laser Queen"
- March 30: "Laser IPop"
Junior Scientist programs are offered on select Sundays from 3:40-4:10 p.m., preceded by a book reading session starting at 3 p.m., in collaboration with the UW-Stevens Point Museum of Natural History. On March 30, attendees can enjoy “Legends of the Night Sky: Orion,” an animated retelling of Greek mythology.
Seating is limited to a first come basis for up to 55 people. Groups larger than eight may arrange special showings by calling or submitting an online request form; fees apply.
The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building at UW-Stevens Point. Parking is available in Lot D behind this building and is free after hours and on weekends.
Weather permitting stargazing sessions occur Monday through Wednesday evenings from Colman Field if skies are clear and temperatures exceed fifteen degrees Fahrenheit. Further information is accessible via their website link provided below.
