The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Department of Theatre and Dance will present "The Pirates of Penzance," an opera-comedy by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, from February 28 to March 2 and March 6 to 8. The performances will take place at Jenkins Theatre in the Noel Fine Arts Center, located at 1800 Portage Street in Stevens Point.
Showtimes are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on February 28, March 1, and March 6-8, with matinees at 2 p.m. on March 2 and March 8. Ticket prices are set at $27 for adults, $24 for seniors and UW-Stevens Point faculty and staff, and $16 for youth. Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.uwsp.edu, by phone at 715-346-4100, or in person at the Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center.
The narrative follows Frederic, a young pirate apprentice who falls for Mabel, the daughter of a Major-General. As he approaches his release from apprenticeship on his 21st birthday, Frederic discovers a complication due to being born on February 29—technically keeping him as an apprentice longer than expected.
"The department was looking for a large cast production with lots of fun and something that our students would not have the experience of doing previously," said Mark Hanson, associate professor and production director.
After nearly two decades since their last appearance on stage at UWSP, Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operas return with a cast comprising 28 students supported by both student musicians and professional community musicians in a traditional pit orchestra—the first such orchestra performance in eight years.
"I hope audience enjoy the high energy of the production numbers and the ridiculous nature of the story," added Hanson. "Who doesn’t love Pirates?"
