The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Schmeeckle Reserve will be the venue for a Candlelight Hike Festival this May. Scheduled for Friday, May 2, from 7-9:30 p.m., the festival's theme is “Fantastic Critters and Where to Find Them.” This event is open to the public and free of charge, though donations are appreciated.

Participants can explore torch-lit trail loops throughout Schmeeckle Reserve, with character skits performed by UW-Stevens Point students at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the Pankowski Friends Amphitheater. Visitors will also have opportunities to roast marshmallows and participate in hands-on activities.

Parking is available near the reserve’s Visitor Center at 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point. Information about the event and volunteer opportunities can be found at friendsofschmeeckle.org/candlelight-hike-festivals/.

Throughout May, Family Nature Programs will be held, free and open to the public, led by UW-Stevens Point students studying environmental education and interpretation. These programs do not require registration and begin at the Visitor Center unless otherwise stated.

Programs offered in May include “Bandits of the Woods” on Friday, May 9, from 10-11 a.m. at Menzel Pavilion, focusing on raccoons, and “Nutty Neighbors: Understanding Squirrels” on the same day from 6-7 p.m., which explores global and local squirrel species.

For more information, the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center can be contacted by phone at 715-346-4992 or by email at schmeeckle@uwsp.edu. The reserve is a 280-acre nature area operated by the College of Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point. It aims to protect ecosystems, serve as an outdoor classroom, and provide recreational opportunities. More details about the reserve are available at www.uwsp.edu/schmeeckle.
